The Director General of WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recently released a statement in which he targeted the tobacco industry for triggering nicotine addiction in young kids. While acknowledging the reduction of tobacco use (due to the implementation of stringent tobacco control measures across the world), Dr. Tredos also warned about the increased use of nicotine-based products among teens and young adults.

Vaping and the use of e-cigarettes were noticed in around 86 million adults and close to 15 million teenagers (aged between 13 and 15), according to recent data collected from 123 countries.

Though vaping was less harmful than cigarettes, increased use of these nicotine products could trigger nicotine addiction in teens and youngsters, if necessary control measures are not taken, according to Dr. Tredos. His warning comes at the right time, because according to 2024 data, close to 100 countries didn't have proper control measures when it comes to buying and using vaping products.
