Highlighting India’s push toward preventive healthcare, the government is promoting yoga and naturopathy as key tools to address lifestyle diseases and mental health challenges. These practices are gaining wider recognition as effective, holistic approaches, supported by growing infrastructure, training institutions, and professional opportunities. The initiative aims to encourage healthier living, reduce healthcare burden, and strengthen India’s position in the global wellness and alternative medicine space.

The Central Government is taking all the necessary steps to strengthen preventive healthcare in India, through the wider and better promotion of yoga and naturopathy. The Union Ayush Minister, Prataprao Jadhav, said that the Ministry of Ayush is highlighting the growing role of these alternative remedies in managing lifestyle-related illnesses and improving overall well-being. The remedies are being recognised as effective complementary approaches for preventive and integrative healthcare.

The statement was made by Mr. Jadhav during the fourth meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Ayush in New Delhi. He stated that yoga and naturopathy are no longer seen as traditional healing methods. Rather, the practices are increasingly being seen as comprehensive tools to fight modern health concerns such as non-communicable diseases, stress, and various other mental health disorders.

According to the official account, the government sees a lot of potential in these approaches to help reduce the long-term burden on the healthcare system by encouraging healthier lifestyles and early intervention.

Highlighting how rapidly the sector has grown in recent years, Jadhav said yoga and naturopathy are now becoming mainstream careers and wellness choices for thousands across the country. India currently has more than 70 Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) colleges, and over 5,000 yoga training institutes, reflecting the rising demand for formal education and professional training in the field.

He added that the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga has already trained over six lakh yoga volunteers, while more than seven lakh yoga professionals and volunteers have received certification through the Yoga Certification Board.

The members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee, who were present at the meeting, were briefed on the importance of naturopathy in boosting India’s wellness economy, employment generation and wellness tourism. Mr Jadhav pointed out that the International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21 in over 190 countries, has significantly boosted global awareness about holistic health and India’s traditional wellness systems.

The meeting ended with the committee members agreeing to set up better platforms for the promotion of lifestyle-based holistic healthcare solutions in India.
